Description:

Description for B&B:

Located in the heart of the picturesque Poitou Charentes countryside, just 60 km south of the Loire, you will find the charming medieval village of Airvault. At The Voltaire Bed and Breakfast, Jo Cottrell extends a warm and relaxed welcome in their 19th Century mansion home.

The Voltaire is conveniently situated near the center of Airvault and offers four spacious double and twin bedrooms, each individually styled and furnished, and equipped with en-suite bathrooms. Our main focus at The Voltaire is to ensure that your stay with us is enjoyable and comfortable, whether it's for one night, a few days, a week, or even longer. The peaceful atmosphere and comfortable beds at The Voltaire have been known to result in guests sleeping longer than expected, so we serve breakfast as late as 12pm.

Each of our guest bedrooms features an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower. We provide luxurious bath sheets, hand towels, and handmade soaps for your convenience. The beds are either kingsize or twin single, dressed in 100% cotton bed linen with soft Egyptian cotton duvet covers. The mattresses are deep sprung to offer the perfect level of support and comfort. If you are traveling with a child under 12, we can arrange for a temporary bed in your room. Additionally, all rooms have ample storage space for your belongings and comfortable easy chairs for relaxation.

The Voltaire also offers a cozy library with an open fire during winter, stocked with a selection of books and board games. We also have a cooler styled sitting room that provides a tranquil atmosphere.

When weather permits, you can enjoy our outdoor spaces. The walled garden at the back of the property captures the early morning sun, providing a lovely spot for breakfast on the lawn. As the sun moves, the garden becomes shaded during the hottest part of the day, keeping it cool and comfortable. The front of the house features a raised swimming pool (available during warmer months) that basks in the sun all day, making it a perfect sun trap.

For breakfast, we offer a continental spread that includes freshly baked croissants and baguettes from local bakeries, Airvault honey, homemade marmalade and conserves, fruit juice, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

Upon request, we can also provide evening meals consisting of four courses, including wine and/or soft drinks and coffee. The price is 22 euros per adult and 12 euros per child under 12. Our meals are seasonal and locally sourced, ensuring a varied and delicious dining experience. If you prefer, we can also prepare picnics with prior notice.

In this idyllic and untouched part of France, we enjoy high annual sunshine levels, second only to the Côte d'Azur. Additionally, our location places us in the heart of the largest sunflower growing region in France.

The Voltaire benefits from its proximity to the village, which boasts stunning architecture and a range of amenities within a short walk. These include bakeries, butchers, restaurants, bars, banks with cash machines, a chemist, and a weekly market selling local produce every Saturday morning.

Surrounded by historic towns, charming villages, beautiful countryside, and swimming lakes, there are also larger attractions nearby such as Futuroscope (a virtual reality theme park), Vallée des Singes (a monkey park where you can interact with the animals), Puy du Fou (a medieval theme park with various shows and spectacles), and La Venise Verte (Marais Poitevins' intricate waterway system that can be explored by flat-bottomed boats). Just 60 km south of the Loire Valley, there are also numerous chateaux and vineyards waiting to be discovered. This is just a glimpse of what the area has to offer, and you can find more details on our website.

To ensure you stay connected, we provide unlimited free WiFi access, and you can make real-time bookings directly through our website.

Directions

GPS coordinates:

Latitude: 46.8256° N
Longitude: -0.1392° W

For those arriving in Airvault from the Poitiers direction, follow the D725 road into the town. Look for signs indicating Centre Ville. You will pass the Gendarmerie on your right, go downhill and pass the Church and Market Hall, also on your right. At the end of the road, you will reach a roundabout with Groupama on the right. Our location is directly across from Groupama, with the Hotel du Cygne opposite. You will see recycling bins on the corner next to our garage. There is parking available in front of the house/garage. If it's full, the public car park is located diagonally opposite on the other side of the roundabout.

If you are coming from Parthenay, Bressuire, or Thouars, join the D725 road towards Airvault. Do not turn at the first signposted junction for Airvault Centre Ville, which is marked by four flagpoles and the town's name in flowers. Instead, continue straight on the D725 road. Keep going until you pass the town name and cross over the river. Shortly after crossing the river, you will encounter a sharp right-hand corner with a left turn off. Take this turn onto D27 Rue de la Gare. Cross over the level crossing and keep left at the fork in the road. This will bring you to a roundabout. The Hotel du Cygne will be on your right, a car park on your left, and on the third corner, you will find Groupama. We are located at the house on the other corner.
