Description:

Description for B&B:

Maison Rives, a historic building dating back to before the French Revolution, has a captivating history that parallels the charm of Montolieu itself. Each room is adorned with furnishings that perfectly complement the natural light streaming through the windows. Whether you have a view of the bridge and the Alzeau Gorge or a picturesque village street, our rooms are spacious, bright, and airy, complete with en-suite facilities.

Start your day off right with breakfast in the salon, where we are more than happy to assist you in planning your day or finding your way around. Additionally, we offer dinner and organize specialized courses, including innovative cooking classes using local, organic ingredients, photography walks and tutorials, and calligraphy training.

Families with children are warmly welcomed at Maison Rives, although we regretfully cannot accommodate pets. Conveniently, there are two car parks available, one located 150m away and another 200m away.

Montolieu, originally known as Montis Olivis or Mount of Olives, sits atop a rocky ridge that separates the Alzeau and Dure Rivers at the base of the Montagne Noire. This picturesque village in the Aude region of France is surrounded by Cathar castles, caves, abbeys, forests, rolling fields, rivers, and lakes, showcasing its natural beauty and historical significance. Charlemagne and Colbert are among the notable figures associated with Montolieu, with Charlemagne establishing the Monastery of St. Jean de Mallast in 800 AD and Colbert, Louis XIV's minister, founding a Royal Manufactory that exported high-quality woolen cloth. In 1146, the Viscount of nearby Carcassonne fortified the village, which was primarily inhabited by vineyard and olive grove workers, as well as those who operated water mills used to power successful textile and paper plants. While the village experienced a decline in population and industry over the past fifty years, a book lover played a pivotal role in reviving Montolieu as a book village, attracting numerous visitors each year. Even non-book enthusiasts appreciate the village's allure and are content to explore the shops while indulging in the various outdoor activities offered by Montolieu's abundant natural and historical treasures.
